Role: Engineering Manager. Role Level: Leadership with people management responsibility. Summary Engineering Manager with extensive experience leading multidisciplinary engineering organisations of 30+ people, including backend engineers, frontend engineers, DevOps and technical leads. Proven ability to scale, optimise and lead engineering functions within fast-paced start-ups and high-growth SaaS technology businesses, balancing strategic leadership with hands-on technical oversight. Adept at managing both in-house and outsourced development teams to deliver robust, scalable cloud-native solutions. Technical Expertise * Cloud and infrastructure: Deep experience in AWS cloud services including EC2, ECS/EKS, Lambda, API Gateway, RDS, DynamoDB, S3, IAM and CI/CD using AWS-native or third-party pipelines. * Backend engineering: Strong background in building and maintaining scalable Python-based backend systems (e.g., Flask, Django, FastAPI), microservices architectures, RESTful APIs, event-driven patterns and data integrations. * Frontend engineering: Familiarity with modern React- and TypeScript-based front-end development, component-driven architectures and UI performance optimisation. * DevOps and reliability: Experience managing DevOps/SRE teams driving automation, tooling, observability, monitoring (e.g., CloudWatch, Prometheus, Grafana), infrastructure-as-code and rapid, stable deployments. * Security and compliance: Oversight of secure development practices, data protection, identity and access management and compliance frameworks relevant to cloud-hosted systems. Leadership and Management * Large team leadership: Successfully led engineering organisations of 30+ people, including multiple cross-functional tribes, squad and DevOps groups. * Organisational scaling: Skilled at evolving engineering processes, architecture and culture during periods of rapid growth, implementing scalable delivery models, recruitment frameworks, performance management systems and technical governance. * Hybrid team management: Experienced in managing distributed teams across multiple geographies, blending in-house staff with outsourced, nearshore and offshore partners to optimise delivery capacity and cost. * Strategic ownership: Collaborates with the founders, product and architects to set technical strategy, define roadmaps and ensure alignment with company goals. * Mentoring and development: Strong track record of coaching engineering leads, supporting career growth and fostering a high-performing, inclusive engineering culture. Delivery and Execution * Project and programme oversight: Supports planning, estimation and execution of complex initiatives across multiple teams with a focus on predictable delivery, quality and risk management. * Process excellence: Implements and evolves engineering best practices including Agile/Scrum, DevOps principles, automation-first workflows and continuous improvement cycles. * Quality and reliability: Ensures that systems meet high standards of performance, reliability and security while enabling rapid iteration and innovation. Start-up and Growth Stage Experience * Comfortable operating in high-ambiguity, fast-moving environments typical of start-ups and scale-ups. * Experience building and coaching teams, modernising systems, stabilising platforms under rapid usage growth and balancing short-term delivery with long-term technical strategy. * Ability to introduce structure without hampering innovation or speed.
