Requirements and responsibilities

Cognistack client is looking for an Applied AI Engineer for a full-time, permanent role. Job title: Applied AI Engineer (full-time). Location: New York, NY, or willing to relocate. In-person collaboration is critical. Position type: full-time, permanent. Compensation: $170K–$230K + equity. Requirements: * Legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship. Role overview: As one of the first engineers at Squad, you will own the AI systems that power the marketplace. You will work on real production use cases of LLMs and other machine learning techniques to solve core business problems, including candidate-job matching and automation of marketplace operations. This role requires developing a deep understanding of the product and business drivers to deliver impact both cross-functionally and independently. You will have end-to-end responsibility for AI projects, including definition, design, development, launch, and iteration. Your work is expected to deliver measurable impact on user growth, operational efficiency, or revenue. This is a demanding role with a high level of autonomy. You will work directly with the founder to shape product direction, make technical decisions, and ship quickly. The role is approximately split between AI and machine learning work, such as model selection, prompting, fine-tuning, and evaluation (60%), and full-stack or product implementation, including APIs, backend services, and UI integration (40%). Key responsibilities: * Building and refining candidate-job matching systems to improve placement quality and speed. * Automating internal marketplace operations by replacing manual workflows with intelligent systems. * Scoping and shipping AI-powered features across the product, including classification, extraction, content generation, and search. * Evaluating emerging AI methods and deciding when to fine-tune models versus prompt engineering. * Establishing evaluation and experimentation protocols to ensure accuracy and consistency. * Prototyping and productionizing AI functionality using real-world feedback to improve performance. * Building tooling and infrastructure to accelerate AI development and iteration. * Collaborating with the team and CEO to support business decisions balancing growth speed and long-term profitability. Required skills and qualifications: * 4+ years of engineering experience, including shipping AI or LLM features into production. * Experience driving AI projects end-to-end, from model selection and data pipelines to deployment and iteration. * Proficiency with modern AI and machine learning technologies, including LLM APIs, embeddings, vector databases, and fine-tuning, along with a strong foundation in full-stack web development. Bonus skills: * Experience in early-stage, high-growth companies or founding teams. * Recruiting or talent marketplace experience is a plus but not required. Logistical information: * In-person work is strongly preferred in New York, with an expectation of approximately three days per week in the office. Relocation support is available for strong candidates.
