Requirements and responsibilities

🚨 New for MATS Autumn 2026: the Foundation & Field-Building track.AI safety needs to scale fast. MATS has trained 10 cohorts of top researchers, and through that work we've seen high-impact organizations hit the same bottleneck: there are more promising ideas than there are people to champion them, and available funding is outpacing the capacity for deployment. This track exists to close that gap. We're looking for driven, resourceful, principled people along three paths:Founders — experienced or fast-learning builders launching new AI safety initiatives. Bring your own idea, or take on one of our mentors' high-impact agendas.Field-Builders — well-connected, high-context generalists who want to own talent development and deployment within AI safety.Amplifiers — high-agency org-builders and generalists entering AI safety to drive impact at an existing org as it scales.Fellows build and launch something new with weekly guidance from mentors who have done it themselves. The streams:Dewi Erwan (BlueDot Impact) — found an AI safety/security company, or launch an ambitious field-building projectMike McCormick & Nick Raushenbush (Halcyon Futures) — product development and org-building across AI safety, biosecurity, and critical cybersecurityGeoff Ralston (Safe AI Fund, ex-Y Combinator) & Charles Pettty — build out the Bio Action Plan (bioactionplan.org); seeking fellows with biology, biosecurity, or public health backgrounds and a founder's perspectiveLisa Thiergart & Luis Cosiolo (SL5 Task Force) — contributing to massive research and engineering projects towards prototyping SL5 datacenters with frontier AI labs; for technical ICs moving into research-lead and tech-lead positionsNora Ammann (ARIA, ex-PIBBSS) — R&D agendas for post-AGI institutions and AI resilienceRosie Campbell (Eleos AI Research, ex-OpenAI) — helping Eleos scale AI welfare field-building, including running high-impact events and amplifying research, communications and operational capacityDege r Tur an (Metaculus) — forecasting, world modeling, verification, coordination mechanisms, and gradual disempowermentThe essentials:10 weeks, Sep 28 – Dec 4, 2026, with a 6–12 month extension opportunity$5,000/month stipend + $8,000/month compute and research budgetBerkeley, London, or remote (in some cases)Housing, meals, travel, and J-1 visa supportIf you feel excited about working with our mentors and see yourself in any of these roles, we want you to apply (link in comments 👇)!
