About Zepher Flight Laboratories, Inc. (ZFL): We are an engineering and manufacturing company focused on the development of uncrewed and autonomous aerial vehicles (UAVs). ZFL’s mission is to enable the widespread use of drones by creating products that can scale in both manufacturing and operations. Zepher Flight Laboratories, Inc. (ZFL) is developing the Z1, a 55 pound, 14-foot span VTOL drone that is powered by hydrogen fuel cells. ZFL received a government contract in 2020 to create the Z1 prototype, and a second contract in 2022 to productize and deliver test articles to the U.S. Military. ZFL relies upon engineers, technicians, and operators who are able and willing to make this next phase of the program a success. ZFL employees must have a good combination of skill, industry knowledge, curiosity, and drive to solve problems effectively and quickly.Summary of Position: Mechanical Engineer I supports the design, documentation, testing, and integration of mechanical systems for unmanned aerial platforms. This position assists in the development of airframe structures, assemblies, and tooling, with exposure to design for manufacturability and structural performance. Responsibilities may include refining CAD models and drawings, assembling and testing prototypes, and supporting readiness reviews in collaboration with engineering, manufacturing, and test teams.This entry-level engineering role requires foundational knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, tools, workflows, and best practices for UAV applications. Executes tasks with guidance from senior engineers, contributes to technical execution and readiness, and develops skills in problem-solving, cross-functional collaboration, and supporting design and process improvements.Essential Duties and Responsibilities:Reporting to the Engineering Director, the Mechanical Engineer I shall have/perform:Technical Design & DevelopmentSupport the design and documentation of airframe structures, assemblies, and tooling under the guidance of senior engineers.Assist with refining CAD models, drawings, and basic analyses to meet performance and manufacturability requirements.Participate in prototype builds, applying engineering fundamentals to hands-on tasks.Software Proficiency: Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and able to navigate basic digital documentation and engineering workflows.Physical activities may include standing, walking, lifting, pushing, or carrying heavy objects, sitting for long periods, keyboarding, other computer and desk work, and auto and plane travel as required.Preferred Qualifications:Exposure to composite materials, airframe structures, or lightweight mechanical systemsFamiliarity with GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing) and drafting standardsExperience with common CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks, CATIA, or Creo)Hands-on prototyping, shop, or lab experienceExposure may come from coursework, academic projects, internships, or related trainingThis position may require access to information that is subject to compliance with the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and/or the Export Administration Regulations (EAR).
