Job Purpose Summary:
The Software Quality Engineer (SQE) owns quality at the system level, across scrum teams, and domains. Where scrum teams own the quality of the features they ship, the SQE owns the customer journeys that span them: the end-to-end regression for a product domain (for example carriers and rating, order import/export, or ERP sync), the API and integration tests that protect it, and the root-cause analysis on any defect that reaches a customer.
The SQE uses automation, AI tools, and strong exploratory skills to find gaps in coverage and risk, turns findings into tests and standards, and consults to scrum teams on coverage rather than testing on their behalf.
Essential Job Functions/Requirements:
- Serve as the domain and systems expert: know how its workflows, integrations, and data behave end to end, and consult Product and Engineering team members on requirements, edge cases, and coverage during the sprint.
- Own end-to-end regression for one or more product domains: define the customer journeys that must always work, automate them, and keep the suite reliable and fast.
- Design, develop, and maintain automated API and UI tests using Cypress and TypeScript, with an emphasis on API and integration coverage at carrier and ERP boundaries.
- Keep your domain’s tests conforming to this standard: test units divided by domain, mapped to code areas, independently runnable, with runtime budgets and a flaky-test quarantine policy.
- Explore the application to find gaps in coverage, automation, and risk to customers; turn what you find into tests, standards, or tickets with clear evidence.
- Run root-cause analysis on every high severity defect that reaches a customer in your domain: identify the cause (using AI), answer whether a test should have caught it, and feed the answer back into tests, standards, and team learning.
- Review developer test evidence and AI-generated test and code review reports to spot gaps; consult to scrum teams on coverage and on the test standards.
- Use AI tools to generate, review, and maintain tests, and validate that AI output is correct and complete before it is trusted.
- Contribute to the shared test standards, including required test types per layer, data seeding, determinism rules, etc.
- Support release readiness with release-tier regression results and post-deploy checks, and give evidence-based input to go/no-go decisions.
Education/Experience:
- 5+ years in test automation, SDET, QA engineering, or software development
- Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
- Practical experience building automated UI and API tests with Cypress or Playwright and TypeScript or JavaScript
- Experience on an Agile/Scrum team, working with distributed teammates
- Experience using AI tools to write or review tests or code
Skills & Expertise:
- Cypress or Playwright; TypeScript or JavaScript
- REST API testing (JSON, authentication, contract-level mocking of third parties)
- SQL Server and the SQL language for test data and verification
- Test design, risk assessment, and exploratory testing
- Root-cause analysis techniques and defect lifecycle management
- Git, pull-request workflow, and familiar with using CI/CD pipelines (Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, or similar)
- Jira and Confluence
- Familiarity with C# / .NET and React is a plus; logistics, freight, or ERP integration experience is a plus
Specialized Knowledge & Skills:
- Systems thinking: sees how a change in one domain affects workflows in another, and tests the workflow rather than the ticket.
- Consults and influences without owning the developers’ work; communicates risk clearly to engineers, leads, and Product.
- Writes clearly. Test standards, RCA write-ups, and coverage recommendations are read by teammates and by AI agents.
- Pragmatic about automation: knows what not to automate and when a test is not worth its runtime.
- Continuous improvement mindset and aptitude for learning new tools and domains.
What Success Looks Like:
- The customer journeys in your domain are automated, mapped to code areas, and green before every release.
- Every high severity defect that reaches a customer in your domain has an RCA within a sprint, and the pattern produces a test or a standard.
- Scrum teams seek your input on coverage and risk before they build.
- Suite runtime and flake rate go down while coverage of the journeys that matter goes up.
