Company Overview:
- We are a U.S. interstate OTR trucking company seeking an experienced Senior After-Hours Operations Dispatcher.
- Schedule: Monday–Friday, 3:30 p.m.–12:30 a.m. Chicago Central Time.
- Format: Full-time, remote.
- During this shift, you will be the primary operational contact for active CDL-A drivers after the daytime Dispatch, Fleet, and Safety teams finish work.
- This is not a track-and-trace or entry-level support position. The role requires an experienced carrier-side dispatcher who can independently manage urgent operational matters.
Responsibilities:
- Take over all active drivers and loads from the daytime dispatch team.
- Continue unfinished time-sensitive dispatch work, including issues missed before the shift began.
- Monitor pickups, deliveries, ETAs, driver locations, delays, loading, unloading, and remaining Hours of Service.
- Provide drivers with pickup numbers, delivery information, directions, facility instructions, and updated plans.
- Make sure drivers remain on schedule and communicate significant delays to brokers, customers, shippers, or receivers.
- Review BOLs and PODs for signatures, legibility, completeness, damages, shortages, seal issues, or other problems.
- Collect detention times, receipts, and other required load documents.
- Keep driver and load statuses accurate in the TMS.
- Help drivers create immediate backup plans when the original plan is no longer possible.
- Handle urgent breakdowns by coordinating roadside assistance, tire service, towing, or repair shops.
- Continue communication with shops already working on company equipment and obtain updates.
- Recognize when equipment may be unsafe or out of service and stop further operation when necessary.
- Monitor legal Hours of Service and make sure drivers are not dispatched into violations.
- Identify serious ELD, fatigue, distracted-driving, speeding, or other critical safety concerns.
- Escalate accidents, roadside inspections, out-of-service orders, cargo claims, unsafe equipment, or serious safety events.
- Prepare a clear handoff for the daytime team.
- Recover or book an emergency replacement load when a load is canceled or a driver becomes unexpectedly empty.
Required Experience:
- At least three years of recent U.S. interstate trucking experience.
- At least two years of hands-on carrier-side OTR dispatch experience.
- Experience working directly with CDL-A drivers and Class 8 tractor-trailers.
- Strong practical knowledge of FMCSA Hours of Service rules.
- Hands-on experience with an engine-connected ELD system.
- Hands-on experience with a trucking TMS.
- Experience handling active pickups, deliveries, delays, breakdowns, BOLs, PODs, and driver communication.
- Experience coordinating roadside service, repair shops, towing, or tire service.
- Ability to make independent decisions without waiting for a daytime manager.
- Strong spoken and written English.
- Reliable internet and backup connectivity.
- No overlapping job or business during the scheduled shift.
