l believe IOP's role first and foremost is to be a trusted adviser to the business/ organisation such as head of sales, marketing, head of supply chain, e.t.c. Because of the intensity of the work at hand, IOPs are expected to come to the table understanding how a business works. As an IOP l am expected to be an expert in terms of talent, organisation, and engagement so as to enable an organisation to succeed.One of the most important things l do as an IOP is to construct an industrial psychology strategy. This includes doing an external scan by looking at things like policy changes, regulatory changes, legislative changes, demographics shifts. All these are scanned so that l or we understand how the world is changing. So, l would also want to understand how your competitors are doing relative to talent and organisation and culture. How are they differentiating themselves, and how do you need to differentiate yourselves? It's then important to understand what your business strategy is, right? How do you win? How do you make money? How does the P and L work? (Profit and Loss)What are the criteria that the business leaders use to really make the tradeoffs that they make every single day on the business? And you take those two things together, and then you really step back and ask yourself, how do I get competitively superior talent into my organisation? How do I create an organisation that's agile and advantaged on the capabilities that matter most? And how do I create a culture where people are engaged and can really maximise their full potential?In simpler terms as an IOP, I do:Training and development. Employee selection, l help companies optimise their recruitment procedures, for example, by developing effective screening tests. l help with ergonomics and therefore l can recommend improvements that will reduce work stress. Performance management, l focus on developing methods for measuring employee performance levels.Work life, l aim in improving the quality of life for employees in the workplace. Organisational development, here l focus on the structure of the organisation as a whole, and advise companies on how to improve productivity through restructure and redesign.
