Created SMS-based natural language planning app using Conversational AI called A Lot Done. Users communicate in natural language to set up reminders (eg. "I need to call mom next tuesday night") or ask about their schedule (eg. "what's on my list for next week?"), and get reminded via text message at the right times. We found users who were successful with the product and liked it, but not a quick enough path to revenue to sustain the business. As CTO I drove the technical implementation and built and led the Engineering organization from scratch. We built Yieldbot into a $50M revenue business, an advertising marketplace with a worldwide footprint targeted by intent and optimized for performance between thousands of sites and advertisers.

For the second year, post-seed, I led the technical team of four of us transforming the product for revenue at scale through to Series A. BlueNote (acquired by Aspect Software in 2008) was a Service Oriented Architecture for SIP-based Enterprise Voice-over-IP services.

I was on the founding Engineering team as Software Architect for this innovative product, helping define the overall architecture, implementing the common functionality for all of the distributed parts of the application to seamlessly work together, assisting engineers with the design of software components, and developing custom SIP protocol extensions for proprietary capabilities.

WaveSmith (acquired by Ciena in 2003) was a telecommunications equipment company that built core-network switch devices for ATM, Frame Relay, and MPLS.

I was on the founding Engineering team as Software Architect on the embedded software team where I defined a robust runtime environment for all embedded software, designed and implemented common execution framework for all system components, provided the core software support for managing hot-pluggable hardware, and implemented key device-level drivers for network interface devices. I later moved to take over leading the Network Management team where I spearheaded refactoring a poorly functioning monolithic Java app to a modular app deployed in a J2EE application server.

New Oak (acquired by Nortel Networks in 1998) was the first Internet-connected device dedicated to enabling secure remote work via Virtual Private Networks.

I was on the founding Engineering team as an embedded Software Engineer where I helped define the core architecture and implementation of base-level support for flexible virtual network endpoints and where I owned implementation and support for all PPP-based tunneling protocols (PPTP, L2F, L2TP).

I also served as an outward facing representative for the company in participating in the IETF working groups and contributed to RFC 2661 on L2TP, and wrote a book on L2TP implementation and operation.

At Shiva I was a Firmware Engineer working on embedded software for their remote access products. I refactored the PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) implementation to be more robust and flexible in support for more dynamic types of network connections as systems evolved beyond hardcoded physical ports. I collaborated with an overseas Engineering team in Scotland, as this was part of an effort to bring together legacy code bases from Shiva itself, and acquired company Spider Systems.

At Xyplex I was an Embedded Software Engineer working in the Ethernet Switch group. In addition to working on core Ethernet switching functionality and services such as VLAN-aware Spanning Tree Protocol, I also helped to define their next generation flexible architecture based on modular components that provided well-defined and consistent services.

At Stratus I was an Embedded Software Engineer in the High Availability LAN group, first as a Co-op student and then part-time. My focus was on a dedicated hot-swappable board that added FDDI, A fiberoptic LAN technology, support to the Stratus mainframe.

I worked on embedded code on the hardware (on the Intel i960), device driver support on the host operating system (FTX - Unix SVR4), and worked collaboratively with hardware engineering and hardware techs to debug for final product hardware build.
