Responsibilities

We are looking to welcome an elite Founding Engineer to the ClearChoice Team. Cataract surgery is the most commonly performed elective surgery in the US, with an estimated 3.5 to 4 million procedures each year. ClearChoice Cataract Counselor is a surgeon-designed, premium patient education platform that elevates the cataract surgery experience through personalized, AI-assisted pre-appointment education. ClearChoice provides patients with a robust understanding the intraocular lens implant (IOL) options most compatible with their visual goals and preferences. Patients are informed about the key features, limitations and cost considerations of each lens implant, including key findings from FDA trials and other peer-reviewed publications. Patients complete the ClearChoice experience in the comfort of their own home, learning at their own pace, with time to process their options with family and friends before their office visit. Patients arrive at the office well prepared to asked informed questions and solidify their lens implant decision in consultation with their surgeon. Patients who complete the ClearChoice experience demonstrate strong understanding of the value proposition of advanced technology lens implants and are twice as likely to invest in these advanced IOL options. ClearChoice is fully-automated and seamlessly integrated into the practice's electronic medical record. No manual inputs, no extra steps - just pure time savings. Surgeons report saving an average of five minutes per cataract evaluation, improving clinic efficiency and workflow. Surgeons who reinvest these time savings into seeing additional cataract evaluations report a 25% increase in overall surgical volume, without increasing clinic time. We spent 10 months in beta with 6 surgeons. More than 500 patients have completed the premium education experience. We are onboarding new practices, integrating with additional electronic medical record platforms, and expanding the product. We are also passionate about bringing sight-restoring cataract surgery to those in greatest need. For every subscribing ClearChoice surgeon, we fund one sight-restoring cataract surgery each month in underserved African communities through our partnership with Daybreak Vision Project. The goal is 1000 sight-restoring surgeries per month. Join us in this joyful, life-changing work. Role Description: The Founding Engineer will work closely with the Co-Founders and play a crucial role in designing, building, and scaling ClearChoice Cataract Counselor’s core product and supporting infrastructure. This remote role involves architecting and implementing new features end-to-end, optimizing system performance, and ensuring reliability and security of the platform. This equity opportunity will begin part-time, with potential to become full time as we scale. What you will Own: - Ship new product features from concept through production - Build frontend and backend, including APIs and third-party integrations - Shape application architecture, databases, and data structures - Improve performance, reliability, and scalability - Design clear experiences for patients, physicians, and practice staff - Keep security and privacy practices appropriate for healthcare software - Troubleshoot production issues and tighten the systems around them - Set up practical development, testing, documentation, and deployment habits - Help shape where we take the product next What we are looking for: - Experience shipping modern web applications in production - Comfort across frontend, backend, APIs, and relational databases - A working grasp of authentication, authorization, and data security - The judgment to know when something needs to be robust and when it should stay simple - Ability to work independently and turn a fuzzy product idea into working software - Interest in the user and the business, not only the code - Comfort with changing priorities and making decisions without a complete brief
