#About Butterbase Butterbase is an AI platform helping professional services firms and AI startups run their operations with AI agents. We are headquartered in the Bay Area, venture-backed, revenue-generating, and growing fast. The team includes folks from MIT and Stanford. Our open source layer has 2.8K+ stars on GitHub. You would be one of the first engineers, working directly with the founder. #The role This is a backend-heavy role. You will build core platform services, data infrastructure, and the agent harness that powers AI workflows in production. There is a small amount of frontend work, roughly 10 to 15 percent. #Required qualifications * Strong backend engineering experience, including at least one production system you owned end to end * Experience building AI applications, AI agents, or agent orchestration systems: tool calling, agent workflows, context management, or MCP * Deep, hands-on PostgreSQL experience: schema design, migrations, query performance, and data isolation in multi-tenant systems * Experience designing APIs and permission systems where correctness and security matter * Fluency with AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, or similar) as part of your daily workflow. We move fast and expect engineers to leverage AI heavily while maintaining a high bar for code quality * Excellent written English. We are an async-first remote team and most communication happens in writing * At least 3 to 4 hours of daily overlap with US Pacific time * High ownership and comfort with ambiguity. You will often get a problem statement rather than a spec #Nice to have * Contributions to open source infrastructure or developer tools * Experience with modern cloud infrastructure (Fly.io, Neon, AWS, or similar) * Prior startup experience, especially as an early engineer * Experience in fintech, legaltech, or other domains where security and auditability are critical * Frontend competence in React
