Responsibilities
We are looking for a Business Intelligence Specialist to take ownership of our client's Looker-based BI environment and broader analytics reporting. This role goes beyond building dashboards. You will be responsible for developing and maintaining LookML models, Explores, dashboards, and reporting, while also providing guidance on data architecture, governance, security, and analytics best practices. The ideal candidate is highly proficient in Looker and LookML, has strong SQL and data modeling skills, and understands how to build scalable and well-governed BI environments. Experience with other BI platforms is also highly valued.
Looker Platform Ownership:
- Provide day-to-day support and maintenance of the Looker BI environment.
- Develop and maintain LookML models, Explores, and dashboards.
- Build dashboards and reporting solutions using BigQuery datasets and data marts.
- Perform LookML updates, user administration, and platform configuration.
- Optimize Looker performance and troubleshoot reporting issues.
- Investigate and resolve production issues during business hours.
- Ensure the Looker environment remains reliable, organized, and scalable.
Data Architecture, Governance & Security:
- Review existing data models and recommend improvements for scalability and performance.
- Provide guidance on Looker security, access control, and governance.
- Manage and maintain roles, model sets, user attributes, and related access controls.
- Establish and maintain metric definitions, business logic, and ownership.
- Promote consistent BI standards and best practices across reporting.
- Ensure dashboards and reports use a governed semantic layer rather than duplicating business logic within individual dashboards.
- Provide recommendations on data architecture, security, and governance.
Analytics Planning & Dashboard Strategy:
- Review existing dashboards and identify opportunities for improvement, redesign, consolidation, or decommissioning.
- Define dashboard requirements and user stories, including target audience, business purpose, decisions supported, and reporting cadence.
- Help design a scalable, BI-agnostic analytics architecture.
- Support the development of future-ready reporting and analytics solutions.
- Support conversational analytics and natural-language querying initiatives within Looker.
Reporting & Documentation:
- Maintain clear documentation for LookML models, dashboards, data definitions, and governance updates.
- Prepare weekly status reports covering completed work, hours, priorities, and upcoming deliverables.
- Provide advisory reports with recommendations related to data architecture, security, governance, and BI best practices.
- Maintain accurate and organized documentation of BI processes and changes.
Required Qualifications:
- Proven hands-on experience with Looker, including LookML, Explores, and dashboards.
- Strong experience with data modeling, including star schema, snowflake schema, and denormalized models.
- Strong understanding of Looker security and access control, including roles, model sets, and user attributes.
- Advanced SQL skills for analytical querying and data investigation.
- Experience working with cloud data warehouses such as BigQuery, Redshift, or similar.
- Strong understanding of BI governance, semantic modeling, and analytics best practices.
- Ability to troubleshoot BI and reporting issues independently.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Able to communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Highly organized and able to manage multiple BI priorities independently.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with other BI platforms such as Tableau, Power BI, Sigma, or Metabase.
- Experience with dbt or similar data transformation tools.
- Exposure to conversational analytics or natural-language querying.
- Experience working in retail, franchise, multi-location, or similar environments.
- Familiarity with Git/GitHub and version control for LookML.
- Experience with Customer Lifetime Value (CLV/LTV) modeling.
- Experience working with Superset.
- Familiarity with data pipelines, data marts, and modern cloud data environments.
