Candidates must be within driving distance.Candidates will need to get a Public Trust Clearance.Government experience is required.Position SummaryBooker DiMaio is seeking a Python Middleware Developer to support a federal application modernization initiative focused on replacing legacy OpenVMS/DCL-based processing systems with a secure, scalable Python-based middleware platform and API ecosystem.This role is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining backend services, RESTful APIs, and workflow automation components that enable enterprise integration and modernized document processing capabilities. The ideal candidate will have strong experience in Python-based backend development, system integration, and Agile DevSecOps environments.The position is primarily remote with periodic onsite engagement in the Washington, DC area. Candidates must be eligible for Public Trust clearance.Key ResponsibilitiesDevelop, enhance, and maintain Python 3.x middleware and backend services supporting enterprise applicationsDesign, build, and support secure RESTful APIs for internal and external system integrationDevelop backend solutions using FastAPI, Flask, Django, or similar Python frameworksImplement workflow automation and integration services across enterprise systems and data sourcesIntegrate applications with databases, legacy systems, and external enterprise platformsSupport modernization of legacy OpenVMS/DCL-based systems into scalable, service-oriented architecturesParticipate in Agile Scrum ceremonies including sprint planning, standups, reviews, retrospectives, and demosSupport CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and DevSecOps practices for secure deliveryTroubleshoot production issues and support performance tuning and system optimizationPrepare technical documentation including API specifications, deployment guides, and operational proceduresCollaborate with technical teams, architects, and government stakeholders to deliver assigned milestonesEnsure solutions comply with federal cybersecurity, audit, and accessibility requirementsMinimum QualificationsBachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)Prior government experience3+ years of professional software development experience in enterprise environmentsStrong hands-on experience with Python 3.xExperience with FastAPI, Flask, Django, or similar Python frameworksExperience designing and supporting RESTful APIs and backend servicesExperience integrating applications with databases and enterprise systemsExperience working in Agile/Scrum delivery environmentsExperience with CI/CD pipelines and DevSecOps practicesStrong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skillsAbility to work independently in a remote environment and collaborate with distributed teamsAbility to obtain and maintain a U.S. Public Trust clearancePreferred QualificationsExperience supporting federal application modernization or digital transformation initiativesExperience modernizing or replacing legacy enterprise systems, particularly file-based or batch processing environmentsExperience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud PlatformExperience with containerization technologies such as Docker or KubernetesExperience with API documentation standards such as OpenAPI/SwaggerPython Institute certifications (PCEP, PCAP, or PCPP) strongly preferredWork EnvironmentPrimarily remote with occasional onsite support in the Washington, DC areaParticipation in Agile delivery cycles within a federal modernization programStandard business hours with flexibility based on program needs
