Requirements and responsibilities

I'm hiring an SRE Manager. This one is unusual, so let me be specific about it.Every Teams message, every Outlook mailbox, every Office doc in Microsoft 365 runs on a backend called Substrate. It has been around 30+ years. When Microsoft went to the cloud, a lot of it got lifted and shifted. Monoliths picked up and dropped in.That worked, but its time to accelerate! We're standing up a brand new SRE organization to fix it: reliability, performance, and cloud native architecture across the entire M365 platform, specifically for the US Government clouds (GCC-M and GCC-H).Why this manager role is different:You build the team, you don't inherit one. We're hiring roughly 30 people across three teams. You'd own one of them and hire it yourself. No inherited attrition, no inherited politics, no inherited runbooks. You define the practice. SRE with a fresh set of eyes is wanted in this space. The on call model, the intake process, the operating model, none of it exists yet. You'd write it. Real scope. Inch deep, mile wide.Real ambiguity. The charter is broad and undefined. If a problem is unowned, it becomes ours. Some people hate that. Some people thrive on it.What I'm looking for:You've managed engineers, and you still know what good looks like technically. You can hire well and fast, because that's the job for the first six months. You're comfortable being handed a blank page instead of a backlog. My leadership style is informal. There's a lot to do and we're going to have fun doing it. I want managers who run their teams the same way.We move fast. My last hire went from screen to done in 9 days.Secret clearance, that's it. No polygraph. No SCIF. Not air gapped. Fully remote (outside the Redmond area).
