Basic Books is a leading publisher of serious, scholarly nonfiction aimed at a wide audience of general readers. It is an imprint of Perseus Books, a Hachette Book Group company. Basic Books is committed to including and representing diverse voices in all aspects of its business, and its publishing programs reflect the broad range of backgrounds, experiences, and ideas that shape our society. Basic Books is seeking a Senior Editor or an Executive Editor to acquire and edit serious nonfiction for Basic Books. The successful candidate will be responsible for acquiring and publishing approximately 10 new hardcover titles per year in fields appropriate to the Basic list. They will work with top experts in various fields to communicate specialized ideas to a general audience and will have plans for expanding the scope and range of Basic’s publishing programs. The editor will also acquire books for Seal Press, a division of Basic Books, which focuses on feminist non-fiction. The successful candidate will have a strong background in working with top experts in a range of fields and will be responsible for commissioning, acquiring, and editing manuscripts for publication, negotiating deals, and collaborating with various teams to package and position books. They will also develop selected backlist reissues and have a broad knowledge of nonfiction subject areas and publishing categories. The ideal candidate will have 7+ years’ editorial or equivalent experience, excellent conceptual and line-editing abilities, and contacts among authors, writers, academics, journalists, or literary agents. They must also have a demonstrated understanding of and an appreciation for the ideas of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Responsibilities: - Commissioning, acquiring, and editing manuscripts for publication. - Successfully negotiating deals. - Working effectively with authors and agents in all phases of the publishing process. - Supervising the production process and collaborating with various teams to package and position books. - Developing selected backlist reissues.
