Requirements and responsibilities

This role is designed for CPAs who value flexibility, autonomy, culture, and balance over maximizing salary and financial gain. Due to the nature of the job, applicant MUST be a qualified Canadian CPA Accountant in good standing to be considered. All others will be ignored. About Us: Our History: - Founded in 2014, KATA Accounting Solutions Professional Corporation is a registered CPA firm in good standing with CPA Ontario. - We work with CPA students to help them achieve their PERT requirements, but we do not do audits nor reviews. - Over the years, KATA and its team members have won multiple awards including: 2023 CPB Firm of the Year, 2024 CPB New Professional Leader of the Year, 2021 - 2023 Insightful Accountant Top 100 ProAdvisor, 2024 & 2025 Insightful Accountant Top 50 International ProAdvisor, 2018 Inspire Accountant Award. - We are highly involved with CPB Canada and have been involved with Intuit for years. - Jonathan, our founder, was one of the initial members of the Intuit Accountant’s Council. - We serve Canadian individuals and Canadian small businesses anywhere in the world (30 countries so far) with personal, corporate, and simple trust tax returns, compiled financial statements, bookkeeping as a subscription service, rollovers, and other accounting services. - We build custom accounting and bookkeeping ecosystems leveraging cloud-based accounting platforms, OCR (Optical Character Recognition) technology, machine learning, and AI. - We are built on Google Workspace and use QuickBooks Online or Xero as the anchors for the accounting ecosystems we deploy. - We are regularly learning about new technologies and applications out there, but avoid evaluating them until they are more proven (we want to avoid shiny-object syndrome). - We are trusted advisors for several bookkeeping firms and are focused on building relationships over having transactions. Our Mission: - To provide a people-first approach to accounting and bookkeeping solutions online for Canadian businesses and individuals. Our Vision: - To help Canadians build sustainable businesses, live better lives, and preserve their family wealth by leveraging cloud-based accounting services. Our Values: - Our tag line is, “Communicate, Collaborate, Create,” and we take it to heart. - Communication is our top value, followed by teamwork and leading to the creation of beautiful solutions for clients, and balanced lives for our team. - We are a tech-leveraged, forward-looking company with a start-up mentality. - We believe in delivering our work correctly, completely, and on time. - We are a people-first company and provide more opportunities for freedom and balance for our team than most people could ever imagine. - We are all human. - We believe in teamwork and lift each other up to keep moving forward. - We are committed to each other, our clients, and ourselves, and are committed to better living. - We believe in continual improvement, learning, and growth, both for our organization and our team. - For this reason, we have a mindset, balance, and productivity coach as a part of our team. - We are extensively networked with other firms and believe in collaborating to provide the best outcomes for our clients. - Coopetition instead of competition. - We are a different kind of firm. Our Work Environment: - This is a 100% remote company without a brick and mortar office. - We do not accept paper. - We do not accept in-person meetings. - Teammates are responsible for ensuring that they have an effective, ergonomic workspace that will allow them to be focused and productive. - Though some meetings are mandatory, there is significant freedom in how our teammates set their schedules. - With great freedom comes great responsibility. - The team is responsible for meeting their clients’ needs before deadlines. - We have a truly collaborative environment where teammates are regularly stepping up to help each other, learn from each other, and teach each other. About the Role: Tax & Advisory: - Prepare and approve T1, T2, and T3 returns. - Perform rollovers. - Manage compiled financial statements. - Assist in advanced tax planning and corporate structuring. Ecosystem Innovation: - Support the creation of cloud-based accounting ecosystems, ensuring client books are optimized for tax and reporting accuracy. Content & Research: - Research and draft articles on tax and bookkeeping issues to build KATA’s brand and internal knowledge library, utilizing Gemini AI for polishing. Professional Evolution: - Engage in cross-training and mindset/productivity coaching with a path toward leadership and team management. The KATA Schedule: - Maintain a 35-hour standard work week, scaling up to a maximum of 44 hours only during peak tax seasons to ensure long-term balance. Additional Details: - You will cross-train with our experienced team while simultaneously being coached on technological productivity via video-conferencing, chat, and other means from your home. - You will be responsible for setting up a dedicated, ergonomic workspace in your home and having a laptop to begin with. - After the probationary period, your technology needs will be provided including laptop, second monitor, and peripheral devices such as a mouse and headphones. - All positions begin with a 6-month probationary period and are hopefully followed by a part-time or full-time offer. - This role has a salary range of $65,000 to $95,000. - It comes with an annual professional development budget, health and dental benefits, mindset, performance and productivity coaching, and several other perks. - You will experience the lowest possible commute times, measured in steps. - You will have more freedom in your job than you ever thought possible. About You: Qualified Expert: - A CPA in good standing with significant experience in tax (individuals, small businesses, simple trusts) and corporate rollovers. Tech-Fluent: - Comfortable with modern hardware (laptops, tablets) and familiar with social media, chat apps, and cloud systems as communication tools. Self-Driven: - Trustworthy and capable of managing your own schedule to hit internal deadlines ahead of schedule without direct supervision. Values-Aligned: - A warm, coachable communicator who believes in "coopetition" and helping clients live better lives through the "new economy". Growth-Oriented: - A lifelong learner looking for a collaborative environment that provides freedom, flexibility, and a move away from the traditional 80-hour week. Team Player: - You are comfortable and enjoy working with a variety of people in a collaborative environment and are able to explain and teach things in lay-terms.
