Responsibilities

Mechanical Orchard builds Imogen, a mainframe modernization platform for rewriting the most critical and complex business applications—the systems that quietly run the world as we know it—so they can continue operating reliably while adapting to new challenges and opportunities. These are business-critical systems where reliability, safety, and correctness are paramount.Delivery at Mechanical Orchard is where Imogen meets reality. Delivery teams work directly with customers and system integration partners in real production environments to modernize mainframe systems using Imogen. This work delivers customer outcomes while also shaping how the platform evolves, ensuring Imogen is grounded in real-world constraints, risks, and opportunities. Our Delivery team operates in complex, ambiguous environments with high stakes. We balance long-term modernization outcomes with incremental, production-ready delivery; validate functional equivalence, performance, and operational readiness; and work closely with partners to enable durable handoff and long-term ownership. We value strong fundamentals, pragmatic use of AI, and close collaboration across roles and organizations. Our values are simple: Do the right thing. Do what works. Be kind. The RoleThe Manager, Delivery Infrastructure Engineering is accountable for how Imogen is deployed, maintained, and supported across customer environments. Partnering closely with Platform, Delivery, Platform, Sales, and Product Support, this role owns the infrastructure delivery and support model — ensuring Imogen deployments are fast, reliable, and scalable while enabling Delivery teams and SI partners to execute modernization engagements effectively. As Imogen adoption grows and the number of concurrent customer engagements increases, success in this role increasingly centers on building the team, systems, and operating model that scale Mechanical Orchard's deployment and support capability — moving from hands-on execution to an infrastructure practice that runs reliably through others. This is a technical leadership role that combines infrastructure ownership, people leadership, and cross-functional partnership. What You’ll DoAs Manager, Delivery Infrastructure Engineering, you will be expected to:Own the end-to-end deployment model — from reference architectures and installation workflows to hardening, upgrades, and ongoing environment support across customer environmentsEnable Delivery teams and SI partners to use Imogen effectively, and draw a clear boundary between Mechanical Orchard's infrastructure ownership and partner-led modernization executionPartner with Platform to influence roadmap and architecture decisions, serving as the voice of real-world deployment complexity in platform prioritizationEngage with Sales and Delivery during pursuits to define infrastructure scope, set readiness criteria, and reduce downstream delivery risk before engagements beginBuild, hire, and develop a high-performing infrastructure engineering team through consistent coaching, career development, and a culture of ownershipDefine the processes, playbooks, and metrics that move infrastructure delivery and support from heroics to a repeatable, scalable operating modelWhat You’ll Bring7+ years in infrastructure engineering, with at least 3 years in an engineering management or team lead roleExperience deploying and operating enterprise software in complex, regulated, or multi-tenant customer cloud environmentsDemonstrated ability to build scalable delivery and support models — playbooks, runbooks, reference architecturesExperience supporting pre-sales or technical scoping activities — defining infrastructure approach, environment prerequisites, and readiness criteria alongside sales and delivery teamsExperience enabling external partners or systems integrators through documentation, onboarding frameworks, or direct engagement supportTrack record of building and developing high-performing engineering teamsStrong cross-functional collaboration skills; comfortable working across Sales, Product, and DeliveryAbility to operate in ambiguity and drive clarity across organizational boundariesThings to Consider Before ApplyingThis is a client-facing leadership role with direct accountability for delivery outcomes across multiple engagements. The role includes regular domestic travel to client sites, up to approximately once per month, to support customer relationships, delivery oversight, and key engagement moments. You will work closely with executive-level client stakeholders and internal leaders, often navigating high-stakes conversations and tradeoffs.Much of the work involves complex legacy systems and long-running modernization efforts, where progress is incremental and risk must be actively managed. The work often spans ambiguity across customer needs, partner capabilities, and platform maturity.
