Requirements and responsibilities

About TernaryTernary is the intelligence platform enterprises rely on to gain visibility, control, and optimization across cloud, SaaS, and AI spending. As organizations scale their technology investments, Ternary helps finance and engineering leaders govern and maximize the value of their technology estate. We move fast, hold a high bar, and care deeply about the problems our customers are solving. Our team brings together engineers, financial analysts, and operators who have built at scale before — and we are doing it again with more ambition. We value directness, ownership, and the judgment to know when to go fast and when to slow down and get it right. The OpportunityWe are looking for a hands-on Engineering Manager to lead our full stack engineering team. This is a player-coach role: you will own a critical segment of our product and platform while directly contributing to architecture, code review, and technical execution. You will report to the VP of Product Delivery and work closely with Product, Design, and other engineering leads to ship high-quality software at pace.If you thrive at the intersection of technical depth and team leadership — and want your decisions to define how a high-growth platform scales — this is the right role. Our StackReact · TypeScript · Node.js · Go · BigQuery · PostgreSQLWhat You'll DoLead and grow a full stack engineering team: hiring, mentoring, performance management, and career development.Remain hands-on — actively contributing to architecture, design reviews, and code; you set the technical bar by example.Own end-to-end delivery of major product and platform initiatives: planning, design, implementation, deployment, and production performance.Drive architectural decisions that determine how the platform scales to serve enterprise finance and engineering buyers.Partner closely with Product Management to translate customer needs and business requirements into executable engineering plans.Define and enforce engineering best practices: code quality, testing standards, CI/CD, documentation, and incident response.Make informed tradeoffs between tactical execution and long-term technical strategy, surfacing risks and options clearly to stakeholders.Uplift the team through structured feedback, regular 1:1s, and a culture of high ownership and psychological safety. What We're Looking For7+ years of software engineering experience, including meaningful time building full stack web applications and data-intensive platforms.2+ years in an engineering management or tech lead manager role, with a track record of shipping complex projects through a team.Strong full stack technical depth: comfortable contributing to React/TypeScript frontends, Node.js or Go backend services, and BigQuery or large-scale data warehousing.Demonstrated product sense — engineering decisions in the context of customer value and business outcomes, not just technical elegance.Proven ability to drive clarity in ambiguous environments: identify the problem, align stakeholders, and move to execution without waiting for perfect information.Strong communicator across levels — engineering team, cross-functional peers, and senior leadership.Experience at both high-growth startups and mature engineering organizations is a strong signal.Actively uses AI tools (e.g., Copilot, Cursor, Claude, LLM-assisted workflows) to accelerate engineering delivery — and expects and enables your team to do the same (strong preference).Hands-on experience building AI-powered product features: LLM integration, prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation, or AI agent workflows (strong plus).Comp and benefitsCompany-sponsored travel to interact with colleagues several times a year.Generous health benefits, 401(k) plan, and a WFH budget for you to set up your home office (not available for contract or short term roles such as internships).Equity compensation so that all employees can participate in Ternary's success (not available for contract or short term roles such as internships). The team culture is the best of what you would expect to see at a startup combined with a level of maturity you would see at a much larger company. At Ternary, we value diversity. We are an equal opportunity employer.
