This role also proactively identifies opportunities to streamline processes and implement automation, leveraging a forward-thinking approach to position the organization for long-term success in an evolving industry.Key ResponsibilitiesUnderwriting Strategy & LeadershipDefine and execute underwriting strategy aligned with company risk appetite and growth goalsEstablish clear underwriting frameworks, guidelines, and authority structuresLead and develop the underwriting team to ensure consistent, high-quality decision-makingTeam Management & DevelopmentManage, mentor, and scale a team of underwritersSet performance expectations, KPIs, and accountability standardsFoster a culture of discipline, collaboration, and continuous improvementPortfolio ManagementOwn portfolio performance, including loss ratio, exposure, and concentration riskMonitor trends and adjust underwriting strategy based on performance and market conditionsActively manage catastrophe exposure, including wildfire and other perilsPricing & Risk SelectionEnsure alignment between underwriting decisions and pricing modelsPartner with actuarial and data teams to refine segmentation and risk selectionMaintain balance between growth targets and profitabilityData & Analytics IntegrationDrive adoption of data-driven underwriting tools, models, and risk scoresCollaborate with data science teams to improve model performance and usabilityEnsure underwriting decisions are informed by robust analytics and insightsReinsurance & Risk AlignmentPartner with reinsurance to align underwriting strategy with risk transfer programsEnsure portfolio construction reflects reinsurance structures and constraintsSupport optimization of retention and exposureGovernance & ComplianceEnsure underwriting practices meet regulatory requirements and internal controlsMaintain clear documentation, auditability, and consistencySupport regulatory interactions and internal reviewsCross-Functional LeadershipCollaborate with claims, finance, and revenue teams to align on performance and strategyProvide insights into loss drivers and emerging risksServe as a key advisor to executive leadership on portfolio risk and growthQualifications:10–15+ years of underwriting experience, preferably in property insuranceActive Property & Casualty (P&C) insurance license in at least one U.S. state is required.
