We’re looking for a Financial Analyst to own the financial heartbeat of our mass-market natural gas portfolio. This role requires a hands-on analyst who can manage P&L drivers, maintain GL/AR integrity in QuickBooks, reconcile LDC and pipeline settlements, validate high-volume billing data from VertexOne (Vortex One), and turn data into insights that protect margin and cash flow.
You will collaborate closely with Finance, Supply, and Operations to ensure accuracy, visibility, and profitability across the company's gas books.
Key Responsibilities:
P&L Ownership & Close
* Own monthly P&L for gas portfolios — including commodity revenue, LDC pass-throughs (delivery, balancing, capacity), gross margin, fees, and bad debt.
* Prepare accruals for unbilled revenue, imbalance/cashout, capacity/demand, storage, transport, and balancing penalties.
* Perform detailed variance analyses against forecast and budget (usage normalization, HDD/weather, attrition, promotions).
General Ledger, AR & Cash (QuickBooks)
* Maintain QuickBooks GL accuracy: journal entries, reconciliations, sub-ledger tie-outs, and roll-forwards.
* Map billing items and tax codes from VertexOne (Vortex One).
* Oversee AR health (POR and non-POR): manage aging, write-offs, and short-pay resolutions.
* Align cash application with utility remittances and payment files; manage monthly close checklist and audit trail.
Billing Accuracy & Revenue Assurance (Vortex One)
* Validate EDI 810/867/814 data and utility rate/tax setup (Ccf/therms/Dth).
* Run shadow billing and usage sanity checks (zero/estimated reads, outliers).
* Reconcile enrollments/drops (814), move-ins/outs, and contract rate plans to ensure accurate billing.
* Identify and resolve revenue leakage (tariff mapping, tax logic, rate mismatches, POR exceptions).
Settlements, Pipelines & LDC Reconciliations
* Reconcile monthly LDC settlements (imbalances, cashouts, true-ups) against forecasts.
* Validate pipeline and marketer invoices for transport, basis, storage, and retainage.
* Track capacity release economics and pass-through recoveries; raise and resolve disputes with LDCs/pipelines.
Forecasting, Reporting & Insights
* Maintain revenue and margin models by LDC/market (HDD/usage profiles, cohort mix, churn).
* Publish weekly dashboards on key metrics: margin per Dth, billing accuracy %, unbilled position, AR aging, and exposure metrics.
* Partner with Pricing and Supply to analyze cohort profitability, promo ROI, and winter risk scenarios.
Process, Controls & Automation
* Maintain internal controls over revenue, billing, and AR cycles.
* Automate reconciliations and data flows between VertexOne → QuickBooks using Excel and SQL (Python a plus).
* Document financial procedures and streamline reporting processes to reduce manual touchpoints.
Qualifications & Skills:
* Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or related field.
* 3+ years’ experience in financial analysis, preferably in energy, utilities, or billing-intensive industries.
* Proficiency in QuickBooks, Excel (advanced), and familiarity with SQL; Python a plus.
* Experience with VertexOne (Vortex One) or other EDI/billing systems is strongly preferred.
* Strong analytical, reconciliation, and problem-solving skills.
* Excellent communication, documentation, and follow-through.
