Requirements and responsibilities

We are looking for a Staff Product Engineer to lead the architectural vision of our backend, joining our Intelligent Edge team, extending the OpenTelemetry Collector with capabilities to reduce the vast amount of data in a smart and efficient way, allowing customers to cut through the noise of big OpenTelemetry installations. You won't just write code; you will own the technical roadmap, drive economic efficiency in our data infrastructure, and mentor a team of brilliant engineers. The Challenge You'll Tackle: - Architect for massive scale and complexity. You will provide technical leadership for our core ingestion and processing pipelines. Your role is to look ahead—anticipating future bottlenecks and ensuring our systems can scale smoothly. - Telemetry Manipulation. You will process and manipulate telemetry data at scale. Avoiding single-points of failure while delivering novel approaches to telemetry volume management. - Drive reliability and risk management. You will own the reliability of the platform, proactively identifying risks before they become incidents. You’ll foster a security-first culture and ensure our monitoring efforts are world-class. - Provide mentorship and improve the process. You will define the standards for code quality, testing, and observability. You act as a force multiplier—mentoring others, reviewing PRDs to ensure technical feasibility, and simplifying complex technical designs to align with product goals. What Success Looks Like (and How You'll Get There): - Within 1 week, you'll have shipped your first piece of production ready code. - Within 3 months, you’ll have extended our pipeline mechanisms with new aggregation and sampling capabilities that are deployed SaaS- and customer-side. - Within 6 months, you’ll have established new architectural patterns for our Go services and OpenTelemetry Collector distributions. You will be actively mentoring engineers across the organization, helping them level up their understanding of distributed systems and observability. - Within 12 months, you will be a technical authority for our Intelligent Edge strategy, having successfully guided the team through major scaling challenges. You’ll have played a key role in shaping the product roadmap by bridging the gap between technical constraints and customer needs. We're looking for someone who: - Has deep architectural expertise in building and scaling distributed backend systems using Go. You understand the trade-offs of different patterns and can explain them clearly. - Has solid knowledge of Kafka. You understand messaging systems and patterns well enough to come up with efficient and creative solutions. - Expertly leverages AI and agentic coding tools to accelerate development, applying deep technical judgment to verify, refine, and own the final output. - Has strong product and economic thinking. You don't just build features; you collaborate with product teams to evaluate feasibility and resource efficiency, ensuring we deliver value to customers efficiently. - Is a natural mentor and cultural leader. You have a track record of improving team processes, fostering psychological safety, and elevating the quality of work around you. - Lives and breathes Observability. As an expert in OpenTelemetry and monitoring, you contribute to improving observability not just in our product, but within our own engineering practices. Must Haves - Deep architectural expertise in building and scaling distributed backend systems - Strong hands-on experience with Go - Experience designing and scaling high-throughput ingestion and processing pipelines - Strong understanding of distributed systems trade-offs - Experience preventing single points of failure - Experience architecting for massive scale and reliability - Solid knowledge of Kafka - Strong understanding of messaging systems and patterns - Experience processing and manipulating telemetry data at scale - Experience with aggregation, sampling, or volume management mechanisms - Deep expertise in OpenTelemetry - Strong knowledge of monitoring and observability practices - Experience defining observability standards internally - Experience owning technical roadmaps - Strong product thinking and economic efficiency mindset - Ability to evaluate feasibility and resource trade-offs - Experience mentoring engineers - Experience defining engineering standards (code quality, testing, reliability) - Experience reviewing PRDs for technical feasibility - Strong collaboration with product teams - Experience leveraging AI / agentic coding tools - Strong technical judgment to validate and refine AI-generated output Nice to Haves - Experience extending or working directly on OpenTelemetry Collector distributions - Experience working on SaaS + customer-deployed (hybrid) architectures - Experience driving organization-wide architectural patterns - Experience shaping product roadmap through technical leadership - Experience fostering psychological safety and improving team processes - Security-first mindset with experience driving security culture - Experience building economic efficiency models for infrastructure cost optimization
