About the roleWeVote is a nonpartisan nonprofit technology startup building the next generation of voting tech. We have an open volunteering position for a Newsletter Writer / Content Developer (2-3+ hours per week) who wants to use their existing skills and learn new skills, while helping strengthen American Democracy. This remote role is within the US.The newsletter writer will be tasked with writing engaging and informative content that shares news, information, goals, and wins for our all-volunteer voter activation nonprofit. You will help draft content that aligns with our mission and values, assist with content planning, and may also be asked to help with research, interviewing, and writing—including writing stories, volunteer profiles, event info, and related news—designed to build awareness and do a bit of cheerleading.This remote role is perfect for journalism students building portfolios or freelance journalists wanting to cover the evolving election landscape.What You'll Do:Write for one or both of our newsletters: one is internal for WeVote volunteers, and the other is an external newsletter reaching voters nationwideCover a wide range of topics, creating news articles for the WeVote Blog (e.g., voting laws, election security, voting access, Generation Z trends, and news related to the U.S. Supreme Court and election deadlines)Help voters make informed decisions through straightforward, informational reportingPitch story ideas and work on editor assignmentsResearch and interview sources for volunteer profiles, event coverage, and election-related newsCollaborate with editors and team members (includes weekly Tuesday meetings, ~1 hour)Receive bylines and clips for your portfolioWe're Looking For:Current journalism students or recent graduates seeking portfolio-building opportunitiesFreelance journalists interested in civic engagement and voting rights coverageStrong writing and editing skills with journalism clips to shareExperience with WordPressBonus: background covering politics, civic issues, or nonprofit workTo Apply:Send three writing samples showing range (any topics welcome) and a brief note about your interest.
