The Brave Media project is a global initiative led by BBC Media Action in partnership with eight other organisations, to enhance the resilience of independent, public-interest media in more than 20 countries.As part of the programme’s global policy stream of work, we are delivering a policy-oriented research deep dive on the topic of media self-regulation in the age of artificial intelligence (AI). The primary objective is to assess the institutional transparency, readiness, needs, awareness, and enforcement capacity of media councils in addressing AI-related challenges in journalism and media.BBC Media Action is seeking a consultant to lead on the delivery of this policy-oriented research, providing input into the final country selection process and conducting a comparative analysis of media council frameworks, codes of ethics, AI guidelines and other AI-related initiatives.The consultant will conduct KIIs with regional or global level stakeholders and where required in regions where the project does not implement work (Europe).In regions where the programme works (Africa, Asia, MENA and Latin America), KIIs will be conducted by the BBC Media Action research teams and other local freelancers; the consultant will be required to liaise with these teams and will be responsible for analysing the findings across all countries.The consultant will prepare a global report, including drafting recommendations at country and regional levels.The role will work in close co-ordination with the BBC Media Action Global Media Development Team and Global Research Team throughout the assignment.Location is flexible, and the work can be completed remotely.Find out more and apply here – closes 12 July 2026.
