Lactobacillus sp and some fungi from termite nests on kolanut trees had mild antagonistic effects against pathogens isol
Afr J Clin Exper Microbiol Feb
    Feb 2020
Background: Residents in a rural suburb of Akure jettisoned antibiotic treatment; sought alternative cure to rising incidence of paediatric infections in 2017 from local herbal dealers, with many residents claiming of better treatment response. We investigated these claims since the local herbal formula included kola nut barks and ground termites. Methodology: Microorganisms associated with termite nests on kola nut trees in the affected community were characterized and identified using standard techniques. The Kirby Bauer disk diffusion was used to evaluate the susceptibility of the bacterial isolates to selected antibiotics. Plasmid profile of multiple antibiotic resistant bacterial isolates (MDRIs) was determined by the Birnboim and Doly

Concentrates from Aframomium melegueta K. Schum and Vernonia amygdalina Delile Inhibit Proliferation of Atypical Fowl Po
Journal of Virology and Antiviral Research
    Dec 2019
This study evaluated the inhibition property of concentrates from Aframomium melegueta K.Schum and Vernonia amygdalina Delile against the proliferation of atypical Fowlpox virus strain (FPV Kabete) in Embryonated chick eggs (ECEs). We determined the effect of the concentrates on the propagation of the atypical FPV in ECEs via virus inhibition assay and linked the possible mechanisms by which compounds present in the concentrates were able to reduce the levels of cytopathic effect expressions caused by the atypical FPV in ECEs. The results showed that the concentrates had multiple inhibitory effects against the FPV while they showed mild toxicities in chick embryos with toxic threshold concentration set at 300 μM. In summary, the A. meleguet

Evaluation of Phytochemicals and Antimicrobial Potentials of Chromolaena odorata (L.) on Selected Human Pathogens
    Microbiol Res Jr International
    Jul 2019
Aims: This research was designed to evaluate the phytochemicals present in the leaf extracts of Chromolaena odorata L. and their antimicrobial activities. Methodology: Dried leaves of C. odorata were subjected to ethanolic and aqueous extraction. The extracts were qualitatively and quantitatively screened for phytochemicals using standard methods. The inhibitory activity of the leaf extracts were evaluated against clinical pathogens; Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella typhi, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis and Candida albicans using agar well diffusion technique at 100 mg/mL and 200 mg/mL concentrations. Results: The ethanolic extract of C. odorata had a better percentage yield of 5.49 g, fo
