Undergrad Capstone Project- Optimizing a high-throughput screening method for the discovery of novel ribosome-targeting
    Aug 2011 - May 2012 (10 months)
Abstract The ribosomes are the protein synthesizing machineries of the cell. Amino acids are assembled on the ribosome based on the codon sequence information on the mRNA. The ribosome performs arguably the most important function inside the cell, thus making it essential for cell-survival. This feature of the ribosome has been exploited in the development of antibiotic molecules that selectively target the bacterial ribosomes. In fact around half of the known antibiotics in the market target the ribosome. Such molecules impair specific functions of the ribosome such as decoding the mRNA information or the catalytic activity itself. In our lab, we discovered several new sites on the ribosome that are essential for its function but still une
