Mauricio Edilberto Rincón Romero, Ph.D. is an assistant professor in the area of Geomatics at the Universidad del Valle in Cali-Colombia. The main activities as a teacher are focused on support for teaching, research and extension or social projection in the areas of spatial information management with geomatic technologies. In the subject of teaching, undergraduate and postgraduate courses are in charge such as: in undergraduate the fundamentals of Geometric Geodesy, Fundamentals of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Database Model for GIS and development of projects in GIS for the Engineering Topographic Academic Program, and in the latter the curricular redesign for the conformation of the Geomatics Engineering Academic Program. For postgraduate studies, support is given to the master's programs in sustainable development and the master's degree in water resources management with subjects on spatial information management with GIS, each one on their topics on water resources management and information management for environmental sustainability.
On the subject of research, Dr. Rincón leads the Research group in Spatial Dynamic Simulation and Modeling (GISMODEL) which has as lines of research the development of multicriteria spatial dynamic modeling and the application of multicriteria spatial dynamic modeling (http://gismodel.univalle.edu.co). GISMODEL is also part of the Center for Research in Innovation in Bioinformatics and Photonics (CiBioFi) (http://cibiofi.univalle.edu.co/) where it has been in charge of leading projects on Precision Agriculture (AP) and Agriculture Intelligent (AI) within the consolidation project of the Center with resources from the Sistema Nacional de Regalias (SNR) of Colombia, with which several products were developed for the agronomic management of flooded rice cultivation in the region, analyzing the spectral response of the crop low diversity of input dosage of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium and planting densities. GISMODEL is in charge of the management of spatial data from its capture to support for decision-making, through the management of spatial databases; the Spatial Analysis of multitemporal data; development of platforms for tracking and monitoring in real time supported by IoT, Spatial modeling; simulation and integration of environmental scenarios for the generation of forecasts and analysis and generation of agricultural yields and health models based on the analysis of multispectral images captured with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). Additionally, work is being done on the development of interfaces for the management of spatial data with applications with free software for the capture, storage and consultation of spatial data.
On the subject of extension, continuous training activities are supported as graduates in spatial information management, geoservices and geoportals for institutions, multipurpose cadastre for local governments.
In all subjects, the foundation of georeferenced spatial data, the rigor of the spatial data treatment in terms of geopositioning, reference systems and management of positional error are of special attention for the consistency of the data
Current project: “Development of a prototype to control the level of the water layer in flooded rice cultivation through programmable automatic gates”. In order to manage the water resource in the region's flooded rice production system, a prototype of automatic and telemetric infrastructure is proposed for the operation of gates, which allow the level of the water sheet to be controlled according to the needs of the crop, to control weeds, pests and diseases and consequently reduce the consumption of water use and mitigate the impacts of its pollution and degradation, both of water, soil and greenhouse gas emissions. The project is experimental, regional at the initiative of the articulation of three Univalle research groups with resources from the same University.
