De-risking, Inclusion, and Value Enhancement of Pastoral Economies in the Horn of Africa (DRIVE) - Integrating a Gender
    Aug 2025 - Current (1 year 3 months)
The De-risking, Inclusion, and Value Enhancement of Pastoral Economies in the Horn of Africa (DRIVE) project aims to enhance pastoralists’ access to financial services for drought risk mitigation, include them into value chains, and facilitate livestock trade in the Horn of Africa (HoA). The project currently spans four countries - Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia, and it presents an innovative approach to address the impact of climate change as well as to increase the resilience of pastoralists and improve their access to markets to enhance the livestock value chain. DRIVE uses a regional implementation approach to protect pastoralists against drought by providing a package of financial services that helps them mitigate financial sho

UAVs as a Tool for Optimizing Boat-Supported Flood Evacuation Operations
    MDPI drones
    Oct 2024
The frequency and intensity of flood events are increasing year by year as a result of climate change. This poses significant threats to human settlements and adversely affects biodiversity, agriculture, and infrastructure. One of the most prominent and traditional flood evacuation approaches is through the use of boats. Nonetheless, serious challenges exist with respect to determining the optimal deployment locations, routes, and timing. Given research advances in the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) sector—and their ability to offer real-time data and aerial monitoring services—we argue that their applications could help enhance boat-supported flood evacuation operations. In this opinion piece, we explore new opportunities for disaster man

Climate-Change-Driven Droughts and Tree Mortality: Assessing the Potential of UAV-Derived Early Warning Metrics
    Remote Sensing MDPI
    May 2023
Protecting and enhancing forest carbon sinks is considered a natural solution for mitigating climate change. However, the increasing frequency, intensity, and duration of droughts due to climate change can threaten the stability and growth of existing forest carbon sinks. Extreme droughts weaken plant hydraulic systems, can lead to tree mortality events, and may reduce forest diversity, making forests more vulnerable to subsequent forest disturbances, such as forest fires or pest infestations. Although early warning metrics (EWMs) derived using satellite remote sensing data are now being tested for predicting post-drought plant physiological stress and mortality, applications of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are yet to be explored extensi

Space-Enabled Modeling of the Niger River to Enhance Regional Water Resources Management
EGU General Assembly Vienna Austria May
    Mar 2022
The Niger River and floodplain landscape is experiencing a constant change as a result of natural and human processes thereby contributing to the yearly occurrence of flooding. The increasing flood frequency and intensity causes loss of life, destruction of assets and disrupts the livelihood of a large proportion of the population. Due to the current data challenges and lack of hydrological information we are developing a 2-D flood inundation model showing the spatially distributed dynamics of water surface elevation and future flood extent of Niger river and its surroundings. We considered the following parameters such as floodplain topography, river channel widths, banks heights, model parameters, and hydrology information to develop our

Effect of Boron and Water-To-Cement Ratio on the Performances of Laboratory Prepared Belite–Ye’elimite–Ferrite (BYF) Cem
    Materials MDPI
    Aug 2021
The effect of superplasticiser, borax and the water-to-cement ratio on BYF hydration and mechanical strengths has been studied. Two laboratory-scale BYF cements—st-BYF (with β-C2S and orthorhombic C4A3) and borax-activated B-BYF (with α’H-C2S and pseudo-cubic C4A3S)—have been used, and both show similar particle size distribution. The addition of superplasticiser and externally added borax to BYF pastes has been optimised through rheological measurements. Optimised superplasticiser contents (0.3, 0.4 and 0.1 wt % for st-BYF, B-BYF and st-BYF with externally added 0.25 wt % B2O3, respectively) result in low viscosities yielding homogeneous mortars. The calorimetric study revealed that st-BYF is more reactive than B-BYF, as the values of heat

Drone services for plant water-status mapping
    IGARSS
    Jul 2021
Achieving an efficient management of agricultural fields is crucial for farmers, considering the challenges posed by water resources sustainability. Monitoring tools allow winemakers to keep their vineyards under control and improve the plants’ health with targeted actions, such as irrigations scheduling or specific treatments. Knowing the actual number of plants may not be evident, particularly in old plantation, where vines might have been removed or added to the initial planting scheme, or even they have never been counted. However, the knowledge of the number and position of the plants is important to be able to adapt the irrigation network and properly adjust the irrigation schedule. The aim of this project is to build a drone service
