  • St Monicas Senior Living
    Catering Assistant
    St Monicas Senior Living
    May 2020 - Jul 2020 (3 months)
In the early days of lockdown I found myself frustrated at the lack of action I could take to help fight the progression of the virus. To contribute in any way I could, I joined St. Monica's Senior Living. This role involved the efficient preparation and delivery of 30 residents' meals. Due to the nature of the work, it required me to be adaptable and organised to ensure the residents all received their preference of meals on time - their decisions often changed at a moments notice. Connecting with the residents was one of the highlights of this work and it was great to put a smile on their faces with the delivery of dinner. I was inspired working with the team at St. Monica's and they deserve every bit of recognition and support!

As a continuation of the research conducted during my MPhys Research Project, I was employed to further the system I developed. Previously, I had developed a gold nanoparticle system encapsulated in an organic shell and subsequently tested this system against bacteria. This nanoparticle system showed great potential as an antibacterial treatment, especially when combined with photothermal therapy. I then suggested potential routes for further research. Following this, I explored a potential functionalisation of the organic shell with loading of silver nanoparticles to enhance the antibacterial effects. The results show that I have proved the concept and due to time constraints my supervisor will finish the work with a strong prospect of pub
