When I began graduate school, I was committed to publishing a light novel (a type of novel that is usually accompanied by manga-style illustrations). Creating a fantasy world with a rich history and characters that motivated readers to fight for their dreams was exciting. Whenever I struggled with my novel I played video games and watched video game reviews on Youtube. An hour or two of action-packed Monster Hunter combat or a detailed Skill Up game review reinvigorated my writing mind. That’s when I realized that I should pursue gaming journalism. I have always been captivated by the stories that games can tell and the process by which they are created. One of my happiest moments with any media was playing through Gravity Rush 2. After completing the first game and being unsure about the title’s future given PlayStation’s lack of PS Vita support I was thrilled to be able to re-enter a world full of colorful and compelling characters. As much as I want to create my own story, I want to write about the video games that inspire me and the studios that make them. It is not just a second creative outlet but a passion. I am creating a gaming review website focused on RPGs using WordPress. I aim to use the formal writing, editing, and researching skills I learned as an undergraduate as well as the storytelling skills I am honing in my Creative Writing MFA to create engaging and thoughtful content.
