Online communities and open systems of product innovation: Models, metrics, and analysis
    Loughborough University
    Jan 2024
PhD in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering thesis - Organisations must foster innovation to survive. But how can any manufacturing firm build and maintain a steady pipeline of new products? Discussion and the free sharing of ideas are significant means of creating new products; ideas are intrinsically collaborative, communal, and additive. Hitherto, it has been challenging to catalogue and measure innovation-creating conversations; this thesis demonstrates that two measures, conversation density, which shows the frequency of information exchange between individuals, and information classification, that is, the use of Artificial Intelligence to categorise the content of conversations, in conjunction with the recording of completed proje

“Growing mangoes in Iceland”: How social media and online communities enable an antifragile and propitiously unpredictab
Academic Conferences and Publishing International Limited
    Jul 2017
Online communities, in combination with innovation contests and social media, can create a context for ground-breaking innovation. Coalesced communications, accompanied by the long-standing "Hacker Ethic", and bolstered by the increasing prevalence of inexpensive tools such as the 3D printer and Raspberry Pi, have re-invigorated an older model of innovation whereby the tinkerer and hobbyist were positioned as a main source of invention. This paper states that this innovation model, following the ideas of Nassim Nicholas Taleb, can be accurately described as “Antifragile”: i.e., it is not solely dependent on the success of one inventor, and can be geared to become stronger through the “failure” of individual projects and the sharing of data.

"No genius without copying": how loosening the "tyranny of intellectual property protection will stimulate innovation
Academic Conferences and Publishing International Limited
    Apr 2017
We live in an "open source" era; however, value extraction from innovation is still largely based on an aged model of protecting intellectual property. Firms are reluctant to create new products and services if they are going to be copied quickly. This principle applies across industries ranging from mobile devices to pharmaceuticals. As a counterpoint, and by synthesizing ideas and evidence from across a wide spectrum, this paper argues that a shift in outlook regarding intellectual property may be required to keep up with developments in technology and how markets operate.

User Communities and the "Dark Energy" of Open Innovation
Proceedings of The th European Conference on Innovation and Entrepreneurship
    Sep 2016
Spending on R&D in the United Kingdom is in decline. A report by the University of Sheffield stated that research and development investment in the UK is now less than 2% of GDP, mainly explained by cost reductions by firms (Jones, 2013). Yet, innovation is needed more than ever for firms to remain competitive. What can be done to redress the balance? The idea of tapping into the "dark energy" (Anderson, 2012, p. 128) (also known as "the cognitive surplus" (Shirky, 2011, pp. 9-10)) of a "community of users" to enhance a product is as old as the Whole Earth Catalog, which was first published in 1968. This method can also be used to invent new products.

    Mister Shah
    Green Sunset Books
    Aug 2010
How does a harmless man end up in prison? Mr. Wahid Shah is a Londoner of Pakistani descent, an accountant, a devoted husband, a fan of classical music. He is also perpetually on guard against the onslaught of unhygienic terrors from a world full of contagion. When one day he dons a surgical mask in order to avoid bacteria on the London Underground his quiet life is turned upside down: he is no longer seen as just another citizen but as a dangerous radical. Suddenly a victim of a paranoia incited by the media in the so-called "War on Terror" he is met with violence. Now he is cast into a dark, excruciating journey through cruelty, doubt and disbelief. As hidden traumas emerge, Wahid has to rethink his own past, present and future.
