I published a paper in the IEEE Journal of Translational Engineering in Healthcare and Medicine with with a team at UCSF.

We built a diagnostic tool for pneumonia by analyzing audio disturbances caused by the presence of fluid in the lungs. I was involved with setting up the clinical procedure and development/analysis of the neural network and statistical analysis of the results including the feature engineering from the audio signals.

  • Forward Inc
    Early Software Engineer
    Forward Inc

Forward is re-imagining direct to primary care by building a network of primary care clinics that offers its patients concierge, preventative care by building founded on a new generation of technology. As one of the earliest software engineers at Forward, I touched every aspect of the technology to build each primary care clinic including: a ground up EMR focused on building long term value into data, a collaborative screen used by each doctor for every patient visit, a scribing mechanism to keep doctors out of busy administrative work, 3p integrations with Quest/Alto/etc, custom body-scanner hardware to replace repetitive tasks of nurses, and a patient facing app to keep everyone in control of their own health.

    Liquefy
    Nov 2015 - Jun 2016 (8 months)
Liquefy is an open sourced platform to automatically provision code on AWS Spot Instances at the lowest cost. We wanted to make generic infrastructure that was cheap for machine learning and other batch jobs that take a long time to run and so saving half the cost is worth adding a few extra hours of run time. One use case was running 5 times as many deep learning models in parallel! AWS spot instances are spare compute capacity that Amazon auctions off at discounted prices but can revoke the machine with little warning. The trade off was to sacrifice run time in return for lower prices. We used statistical regression across Amazon's historical pricing data to find the lowest cost for different computational payloads.

  • Delphix
    Software Development Intern
    Delphix
    May 2013 - Aug 2013 (4 months)
I wrote my own remote file synchronization protocol over Delphix's custom session protocol DSP (Delphix Session Protocol). The protocol was based on the Unix rsync tool and was aimed to minimize byte data sent between machines (i.e. sending only byte changes/deltas) and to provide extended functionality of resume, suspend, and progress tracking. The changed byte data was founding using a rolling hash algorithm. Benchmarked against rsync, the byte difference algorithm worked equally as well.

Improved Detection of Lung Fluid With Standardized Acoustic Stimulation of the Chest
    Aug
In this paper, an acoustic transducer and a digital stethoscope system are proposed as a targeted solution for this clinical need. Alterations in the structure of the lungs lead to measurable changes which can be used to assess lung pathology.
