John Rogers

I first realized that I wanted to become a Geographer after surviving alone in the Red Buttes Wilderness for three days, straddling the western crest of the Siskiyou Mountains and blaming my 15 year old self for neglecting to bring a map along on that "soul seeking" adventure. Following my undergrad days at the University of Oregon (BS Geography, BA Environmental Studies) I completed the Graduate Certificate program in GIS at Portland State University in 2016 - immediately followed with a MS in Geography in 2018. I researched polar vortex trends using GIS and global climate models to better understand Stratospheric Polar Vortex variability in the Northern Hemisphere under anthropogenic forcing and future climate scenarios. I enjoyed bridging the gaps between climate science & climate modeling, engineering, natural resource sciences, and Geographic Information Systems; all in which I practice in my current career. I continue my career utilizing my skills as a Geographic Information Systems professional and project manager, while working in natural resource management, watershed science and forestry, storm water planning, hydrology, urban planning, ecology, and cartography. My career integrates experience in the public and private sectors with my passions for wilderness, physical geography, environmental science and teaching geography. I am currently a professor at Portland State University teaching GIS for Water Resources. I have a passion for utilizing UAV's for data collection and am a certified FAA Remote Pilot. I have aspirations to become an airplane or helicopter pilot in the near future. I am an Oregon native, and a passionate explorer, mountaineer, trail runner, mountain biker, backpacker, raft guide, and am currently residing and recreating in the Grand Tetons, Wyoming side.
