  • S
    VP of Engineering
    Spacee Inc
    Dec 2022 - Current (3 years 7 months)
I was promoted to lead a team of 29 (including 6 managers) across Hardware, Software, and Devops in addition to Data Science, Data Engineering, and Computer Vision teams. We built a coordinated system of computer vision (leveraging PyTorch for YOLO, optic flow, image stitching) and data science (decision rules, logistic regression, spatial geometry calculations) algorithms to identify products on a retail shelf with over 90% accuracy.
  • S
Director of Engineering, Data & Computer Vision
    Spacee Inc
    Sep 2021 - Dec 2022 (1 year 4 months)
I managed a 7-member team of Data Scientists and Computer Vision Engineers in applying cross-functional approaches to the problem space. This increased our price reading, empty detection, and planogram compliance performance by an average of 9x - eclipsing the performance of our competitors. We also overhauled how Spacee processes data from primarily low observability sequences of SQL triggers and stored procedures to source controlled and centrally orchestrated data science code. And we developed an environment accessible to data scientists of varying experience levels that allowed them to write code in SQL, Python, or R and quickly get it into production.

I joined as employee #45 and the 2nd Data. When I left, the company was > 400 and the Data Team had 39 employees. In my time there, I: ▶️ Designed and executed a series of pricing and packaging analyses, including exploratory data analysis, unsupervised machine learning, and design and analysis of experiments, influencing product strategy and a shift upmarket ▶️ Built out Zapier's initial AWS data engineering stack with technologies like Apache Airflow, AWS Athena, Docker, Ansible, Terraform, Redis, Looker, and Kafka. ▶️ Developed a near-real-time ML approach to A/B testing, serving multiple high traffic pages simultaneously and allowing 8x faster decision making in quant assessment planning, execution, and reporting ▶️ Formed and le

Utilizing multisensory cues to facilitate air traffic management
    Human Factors in Aviation
    May 2012
(I am second author on this publication) Objective: In the present study, we sought to investigate whether auditory and tactile cuing could be used to facilitate a complex, real-world air traffic management scenario. Background: Auditory and tactile cuing provides an effective means of improving both the speed and accuracy of participants’ performance in a variety of laboratory-based visual target detection and identification tasks. Method: A low-fidelity air traffic simulation task was used in which participants monitored and controlled aircraft. The participants had to ensure that the aircraft landed or exited at the correct altitude, speed, and direction and that they maintained a safe separation from all other aircraft and boundaries

Pursuing happiness in everyday life: The characteristics and behaviors of online happiness seekers
    emotion3D
    May 2012
(I am the third author on this publication) Although the last decade has witnessed mounting research on the development and evaluation of positive interventions, investigators still know little about the target population of such interventions: happiness seekers. The present research asked three questions about happiness seekers: (1) What are their general characteristics?, (2) What do they purposefully do to become happier?, and (3) How do they make use of self-help resources? In Study 1, we identified two distinct clusters of online happiness seekers. In Study 2, we asked happiness seekers to report on their use of 14 types of happiness-seeking behaviors. In Study 3, we tracked happiness seekers’ usage of an iPhone application that offer
