Most people have an HR horror story. My job is to make sure nobody gets one from me.
Early in my career, I experienced a RIF that was handled so poorly. It stayed with me for a long time. Not because the business decision was unusual, but because the empathy and understanding of the impact was completely missing. That's what sent me back to school for a Master's in I/O Psychology and eventually back into that same company as an HR Specialist so I could do the job the way I wished someone had done it for me.
Today, I'm VP of People at Radformation, a global radiation oncology software company built by clinical physicists, dosimetrists, engineers and people who care deeply about improving cancer care. I joined in 2021 as employee #56 and we are now over 220 people, fully remote across the U.S. and in 13+ countries. My team owns the whole employee experience: talent acquisition, employee relations, compliance, manager support, engagement and all the operational plumbing that lets a company grow fast without things falling apart.
The work is both strategic and deeply human. Some days it is standing up people infrastructure in new countries or supporting an acquisition. Other days it's coaching managers through hard conversations and building process where there was once duct tape. Once a year it's planning the company retreat and watching a remote team become real and meet their peers behind the camera. (Still my favorite week on the calendar!)
My background is a little science brain, a little people brain: a BA in Biology with minors in Chemistry and Psychology, followed by graduate work in I/O Psychology. That mix has served me well in software companies built by highly technical people. Before Radformation, I grew through HR roles in biotech, automotive SaaS, and construction SaaS, from HR Specialist to VP of People.
If you're an HR team of one, please reach out. The mentors who showed up for me early on made all the difference and I'd like to be that for someone else. I'm always happy to talk with founders and leaders about HR, AI, talent, and where the People function is headed.
