C-Band RISAT-1 data for Crop Growth Assessment of Rice
Asian Journal of Geoinformatics Asian Association of Remote Sensing Mar
The recently launched Indian satellite RISAT-1 in microwave region removes the limitations of optical sensors with “all-weather”, day or night imaging capabilities and is anticipated to be a useful data sources for rice crop monitoring in tropical and sub-tropical regions. The main purpose of this study was to analyze the temporal behavior of rice backscatter of two types of rice (basmati and non-basmati) growing simultaneously and; to assess the potential of dual-polarized C-band RISAT-1 data to estimate the Leaf area index (LAI) of paddy rice. Four Medium Resolution ScanSAR (MRS) dual-polarization (HH/HV) mode RISAT-1 data were acquired as per the growth stage over the part of Karnal district, India in kharif season of year 2012 and groun

Temporal analysis of different crops using quad-pol RADARSAT-2 data
Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium IGARSS IEEE InternationalIEEE Jul
The objective of this study is to understand the temporal characteristic of cotton, sugarcane, banana and rice crop using C-band quad pol RADARSAT-2 data. Temporal response of these crops was analyzed using H/A/α and model based Freeman-Durden decomposition. Results of this preliminary study indicate that the (Entropy, anisotropy α and α1) parameters are sensitive to crop growth stages and can be used for crop mapping and monitoring purpose. The three basic scattering mechanisms (surface, volume and double-bounce) and H/A/α parameters obtained from these decompositions found suitable to distinguish between crop types and their temporal sensitivity.

Evaluation of Time Series TanDEM-X Digital Elevation Models
ISPRSInternational Archives of the Photogrammetry Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences Dec
Digital Elevation Model (DEM) is an important input for geo-spatial analysis. For various applications like flood management, ortho rectification of remote sensing images, navigation, architectural works, defence, etc., high resolution DEM is required. TanDEM-X mission was launched in 2010 to obtain high resolution global DEM with HTRI-3 standard. SAR interferometry (InSAR) technique is used for DEM generation from TanDEM-X SAR data. The accuracy of DEM depends on many parameters like height ambiguity, incidence angle, polarization, etc. In this study, time series TanDEM-X data spanning over 3 years, had processed for generating
DEM at the spatial resolution of 6 m and their accuracy had studied using DGPS elevation data and SRTM 90 m

Calibration of RISAT-1 Compact Polarimetric SAR System using Point Targets
CEOS Calibration and Validation Workshop ESANoordwijk The Netherlands Oct
After the launch of Indian spaceborne SAR system RISAT-1 in April 2012, compact polarimetric
SAR data is available operationally for various geo-physical applications. For the retrieval of
geo-physical parameters from compact polarimetric data, it is important to calibrate compact
polarimetric SAR data. In order to validate the calibration of RISAT-1 SAR data, both trihedral
and dihedral Corner Reflectors (CRs) were mounted synchronous with satellite passes on May
24 and June 14, 2015 at Vijayawada test site, Andhra Pradesh, India. Integrated power approach
and peak methods are used to find the difference between theoretical and measured sigma-0 for
three trihedral CRs. The average difference between theor

Identification of forest cutting in managed forest of Haldwani, India using ALOS-2/PALSAR-2 SAR data" Journal of Enviro
      Elsevier Feb
Large-scale forest clear-cut identification is one of the major application of remote sensing techniques. ALOS-2/PALSAR-2 is the latest SAR satellite providing multi-polarized L-band SAR data. With increasing deforestation, it is important to assess the potential of SAR data for identifying clear-cuts in forest regions. In this research work, multi-temporal ALOS-2/PALSAR-2 SAR data and supplementary Landsat-8 optical data sets are acquired over Indian tropical forest, and SAR parameters are analysed over a progressively clear-cut Teak plantation. Sensitivity of the SAR parameters to progressive clear-cuts is estimated and found that the cross-polarized backscatter and entropy parameter H are most sensitive to both partial and complete clea

Comparative analysis of RISAT-1 and simulated RADARSAT-2 hybrid polarimetric SAR data for different land features
ISPRSInternational Archives of the Photogrammetry Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences Dec
The purpose of this study is to compare the performance of first hybrid polarimetric spaceborne satellite RISAT-1 data and simulated hybrid polarimetric data from quad-pol RADARSAT-2 data for different land use land cover (LULC) classes. The present study compares Stokes (g0, g1, g2 and g3) and its decomposed parameters (m, chi, delta and CPR) for satellite data acquired from RISAT-1 and RADARSAT-2 over Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, India. Further, backscattering coefficients are also compared for different LULC types. The results indicate that both the satellites are following approximately the same trend for different classes except for
      settlements in RISAT-1.

Leaf area index estimation of lowland rice using semi-empirical backscattering model
Journal of Applied Remote SensingInternational Society for Optics and Photonics Jan
Rice crop monitoring using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) polarimetry is one of the
thrust areas of research in radar remote sensing due to unavailability of optical data in
critical growth stages of crop because of dense cloud cover during the growing season
(monsoon) in India and Southeast Asia. The prime objective of this study was to assess the
potential of polarimetric C-band SAR data to estimate the leaf area index (LAI) of two
varieties (non-basmati and basmati) of paddy rice. Seven fine Quad-pol single look ...

Temporal Response of Scattering from Crops for Transmitted Ellipticity Variation in Simulated Compact-Pol SAR Data
IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote SensingIEEE Nov
      Abstract:
In this paper, the received compact polarimetry (CP) parameters are analyzed to infer ellipticity variations related to the transmission of a polarized electromagnetic wave. A generalized 2×2 CP covariance matrix is created as a function of the transmitting ellipticity and orientation angle. The Stokes parameters, backscattering coefficients, and the m-χ decomposition scattering powers are used to interpret the temporal behavior of crop growth stages with varying transmitted ellipticities. Time series RADARSAT-2 fully polarimetric synthetic aperture radar data acquired during the Soil Moisture Active Passive Validation Experiment 2012 campaign are used to simulate the CP data. The results clearly show that the transmitted ell

Crop Classification using RISAT-1 Hybrid Polarimetric SAR Data
EUSAR th European Conference on Synthetic Aperture Radar Proceedings of VDE Jun
With the availability of high resolution hybrid polarimetric data from the Indian RISAT-1 and planned SAR systems supporting hybrid polarimetric mode, researchers are actively exploring the capabilities of hybrid polarimetric mode for various applications. In this paper we have analysed the scattering mechanism of different land-covers and crop types using the m-chi decomposition and performed supervised Wishart classification. Hybrid polarimetric data from RISAT-1 is found to be suitable for crop classification as major crops are well distinguished. An overall classification accuracy of 81% and 87% is obtained using May and Nov. 2013 data respectively.
