Leading the development of runtime credit underwriting infrastructure (feature extraction, document fetching, credit policy execution, etc). This includes the design and implementation of a system that spans services in Python, Clojure, Java, and Scala.

Introduced Protobuf into the system to ensure strong contracts between services in different languages and to enforce consistency across the offline and online data science processes.

As tech lead, I was in charge of quarterly and longer term plans and roadmap for the underwriting team, the technical vision for the systems, and execution of our goals. I mentored engineers and led initiatives to improve the quality of engineering at Lendup.

    Apr 2017 - Mar 2018 (1 year)
Designed and implemented a large scale refactor of the account management system and its data models to improve performance, auditability, developer productivity, and system confidence. Emphasized functional patterns into the codebase, including immutability and modeling the system as a pure function on an event-based data model. Decreased response times 5x and reduced errors to essentially nonexistant. The system now handles, on average, 50-60 requests per second.

Continued to performance tune our systems, including optimizing Postgres access patterns in a data-driven manner to improve response times.

Designed and built a highly modular and extensible reporting platform to aggregate data from various sources and compile them into reports. Made it easy to add new reports, including data sources, data filtering, and data processing.

Managed, designed, and built a Flask application with a fellow intern. Architected a job queue/worker system built on top of Redis to allow processing of large amounts of data. Easily scaled by spinning up n

Using Java, developed a multithreaded file traverser utilizing ThreadPools, which searched the file system for certificate files. The program would then encrypt the files using CryptoKey and store the encrypted keys on the KeyAppliance (a device which facilitates the storage and retrieval of encrypted data). The application would then erase the certificate from the filesystem. Used SQL and JDBC for storing metadata of the encrypted certs.

Designed a custom template with Bootstrap LESS and jQuery.

Heavily profiled performance of the website in order to optimize speed. Optimizations included compression/minifying of assets, restructuring the template for above the fold content, optimizing queries on individual pages, and improving image delivery. Was able to successfully cut page loading and server response time in half.

Deployed on DigitalOcean. Tuned for performance using varnish cache, Nginx, and secured the site against XML-RPC and other such wordpress-based attacks.
