Chief Speechwriter and Senior Economic Adviser
Prime Minister of Australia
Jan 2007 - Dec 2010 (4 years)
I worked for Prime Ministers Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard as chief speechwriter and as senior economic adviser, from our time in opposition to winning successive elections in 2007 and 2010.
A Prime Minister's speeches play a central role in policy formulation, and this role involved co-ordinating with government ministers, the bureaucracy, business groups and community organisations. It required developing immediate responses to major national and international events, as well as articulating the strategic goals of policies and their impacts. It provided me with extensive exposure to a vast range of issues from foreign policy to economic issues to social policy and to local, grassroots concerns.
