I worked for Prime Ministers Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard as chief speechwriter and as senior economic adviser, from our time in opposition to winning successive elections in 2007 and 2010. A Prime Minister's speeches play a central role in policy formulation, and this role involved co-ordinating with government ministers, the bureaucracy, business groups and community organisations. It required developing immediate responses to major national and international events, as well as articulating the strategic goals of policies and their impacts.It provided me with extensive exposure to a vast range of issues from foreign policy to economic issues to social policy and to local, grassroots concerns.

In partnership with specialist lawyers in London, Chicago, Singapore and Toronto, I established the firm's global privacy practice group and worked on numerous projects to help large businesses rationalise their cross-border information handling practices.

Leading Edge Education was an integrated publishing and educational services business founded in 1994, which became the largest economics publisher in its sector before being acquired by Pearson in 2004. Its key markets were economics, business studies and commerce textbooks for Australian school students and teachers, and it provided a year-long exam preparation course as well as essay strategy courses, in-school courses and lecture programs. Through its resources and student programs, Leading Edge helped many students to win the top places in statewide examinations.
