After graduating from University, I co-founded Xello together with friends Jeff Harris and Angus McMurtry. We started out interviewing people about their jobs to get the inside story on careers. What did they like about their job? What didn’t they like? What advice did they have? We took the results of these interviews and using what at that time was new technology (sound and video clips on a computer!) we created the first version of Xello. The goal was simple: to open up the world of work in a way that was immediately accessible to all.
We hit a nerve. People liked what we were doing and it was needed. So we kept on doing it.
Today, Xello is used in over 20,000 schools, libraries, and community centres across North America and the UK. Each day we have over 100,000 people logging in and using our site, with over 8 million student users globally. We’re the state-approved CCR solution in 10 states and counting, and we’ve introduced The Real Game and work-based learning to help every student become future ready.
Mission accomplished? Not quite yet.
The world has changed. Globalization, technological change, AI, upskilling of jobs…the challenges are enormous for anyone seeking to fit into today’s rapidly changing world. Fact is, our success makes us feel a strong sense of responsibility to innovate with purpose. And it’s no longer just about showing people the inside story on careers.
At Xello, we deliver scalable, student-centered career and post-secondary readiness by combining engaging experiences with educator tools that drive insight and measurable outcomes. Xello empowers educators to guide every student—regardless of background—through meaningful self-discovery, exploration, and planning, so that they graduate confident and future-ready.
