Preventative Health - Nutrigenetics and One Carbon Metabolism

Poor diet can play a large role in disease pathology. A literature review suggests that genetic differences may create differential nutritional requirements for the prevention of disease. The emerging field of nutrigenetics, whereby gene variants dictate nutrient metabolism and recommendations, may lead to a revolution in personalized preventative health care. Perturbations in the one carbon metabolism pathway have been linked to an array of diseases such as cardiovascular, autoimmune, cancer and neurodegerative diseases. Specific genetic differences in genes coding for enzymes involved in this pathway can predispose individuals to disease development if nutritional requirements are not met.

Charlie the Chatterbot

Machine Learning Chatbot with Slack Integration and data visualizations using D3.js. React and D3 on the front-end with Node, Express, MySQL and a machine learning Python framework called Chatterbot on the back-end. We collected conversational data and sent it to the AlchemyAPI for sentiment analysis, which we then visualized. This gave insights into the "personality" of the chatbot, as it learned from the conversations it had.

The Effect of Isoflurane Exposure on Ethanol Self-Administration in Adolescent Rats

The study investigated the effect of acute isoflurane exposure on subsequent ethanol-self administration in a rodent model. No significant differences were found between groups exposed to isoflurane or exposed to air.

Age related performance differences for the brown mouse lemur (Microcebus rufus) in a t-maze task

Aging in humans is typically associated with a decline in cognitive ability. M. rufus can be used as a good model for understanding the biological factors underlying cognitive impairment. Like humans, they are one of the few other primates that exhibit the physiological symptoms associated with Alzheimer's disease and can be used as a model organism to learn more about the causes of the disease. I hypothesized that young mouse lemurs would learn a t-maze task faster than old mouse lemurs. Both young and old mouse lemurs were run through a t-maze task. It was found that the young mouse lemurs learned the task more quickly, but there was not enough data to make any statistical conclusions. The next steps would be to attempt MRI scans of

Isoflurane Exposure Enhances Ethanol-Related Behavioral Responses in Adolescent Rats

Anesthetic exposure during critical periods of development is associated with detrimental neurobiological and behavioral effects. This study investigated the effect of acute anesthetic exposure on subsequent ethanol induced sensitivities. It was found that acute anesthetic exposure during adolescence results in persistent decreases in sensitivity to the sedative/hypnotic effects of ethanol, along with increasing the memory impairing effects of ethanol.

Micro-credential Builder

A full stack web application that automates much of the work necessary to create a micro-credential (think mini certifications for k-12 teachers) with Digital Promise. The app collects the data necessary to submit a micro-credential application to Digital Promise and then builds PDF, docx and HTML documents then stores them in Google Cloud to be served to users. The front-end consists of React, Redux and Webpack and the back-end consists of Node, Express, Google Cloud Storage and Google Cloud SQL.
